Why Bad Christmas Movies Are So Good

Hallmark Christmas movies are not good movies. They're cheesy, predictable, and unrealistic rom-coms disguised as Christmas movies.

I love them.

Because even though they will never stand up to the classics, Hallmark Christmas movies capture the magical feeling of Christmas.

The formulaic plots are overshadowed by the sheer essence of Christmas. Every scene is oozing with twinkling lights, trees, wreaths, snow globes, ornaments, and decorations. And it will 100% start snowing on Christmas Day.

Over the weekend I watched a handful of these movies. My favorite was Christmas by Starlight. What set this one apart were the likeable characters, decent writing, and somewhat realistic plot. 

Who am I kidding. It wasn’t realistic. Annie puts her family law practice aside for a week to pretend to be the lawyer of Will - a complete stranger. A lot of disbelief was suspended for this one.

Towards the end, Will fails to keep his promise to save Annie’s parent’s cafe because his father says no. So what does he do to win Annie’s heart?? 

Well, he doesn’t do anything, really. Will tells his father what he already told him - with conviction this time - that they can’t tear down the cafe. Of course his father now concedes.

And yet, I loved it. The guy gets the girl and the cafe is saved. Merry Christmas to all!

Watching a Hallmark Christmas movie is like putting on the Christmas radio station: it plays in the background to get you in the mood for the most wonderful time of the year. 

We all put it on, eventually.
